The Commish…
The Commissioner of Education π« was not at all what I suspected. Dr. Matt Blomstedt (https://www.education.ne.gov/commissioner/) was a guy in a suit π€΅but he made a point to share that was not always who he was now π¦π». The title of his session was “Champions for Equity and the Crucial Role of Supporting Student Equity in Schools”, not what I was thinking about when I had a sour taste in my mouth about the Department of Ed. π€’
Do they even care about what is best for kids?
He comes from Palisade, NE where his father, a electric linemanπ, was also the school board president. This was during the 80’s Ag crisis and Palisade School was trying to figure out how to do what was best for kids.
One of the things the commissioner’s dad came up with was to consolidate with Waunita. There was a lot of uproar and he worked on it for several years after being threatened at work and other hardships he had to endure, but he did endure because it was what was best for kids. Education and its importance was part of his growing up. π€―
Dr. Matt was inspired by his dad and even though he did not go into education he is now in a position where he can make a difference and he asked that WE do too. (http://nebraskaeducationvision.com/)
He had 3 powerful take aways:
-π£οΈSpeak up for what is wrong.
-πbe a change agent
-πengage others because no one can do it on their own.
So how are we going to band together?
-Talk to each other! π«π€
-Support when you can, even if it is just lending an ear. π
-Share this information and keep informed. π
Have a conversation with a colleague and ask about non school related topics like autumn decorations. π
**Is it too soon to start putting them up?
π€©We are change agents and can be champions for the students of Nebraska.π€©
